Frequently Asked Questions

How can Martial Arts benefit me?

Martial arts benefits everyone who practices it. Taekwondo students will benefit from increased fitness which will improve day to day health but also will reach an inner calm which will improve focus and concentration. Not to mention the confidence achieved from learning self defense techniques in a controlled environment.

How old must my children be before they can start Taekwondo?

Depending on the club and the ability of the child; children as young as four years old may start Taekwondo. The younger sessions are much more geared towards fun games to assist in motive skills. The martial arts develops later.

Do I have to be fit before I join?

The Taekwondo training session is intensive and you will notice increased fitness very quickly after starting training.

Do I have to be flexible?

Our instructors have years of training in flexibility conditioning. However, some people may never achieve the levels of flexibility of younger students. This will in no way prevent you from progressing within the UKTG. Flexibility is only a small part of what makes a good martial arts practitioner.

Are children and adults taught together?

No, junior classes and adult classes are separated. Teaching techniques for children and adults are very different. The stimulations that assist learning are very different and hence the structure of the classes are designed to maintain concentration and enjoyment of the 2 different groups.

Will I be able to defend myself and be more confident?

You will learn to strike with your hands and feet as you progress through the syllabus. The UKTG also adopt the MAG Self Defense system which is taught to all adults within our classes and forms part of the grading syllabus.

Do I have to enter competitions?

No, entering competitions is totally optional. Competitions are held regionally, nationally and internationally and are split between male and female, age, height, weight and experience. Competition is a good opportunity for the student to apply some of the techniques they have learned, in a controlled safe environment.
